Hollywood union reaches agreement with major studios on wages, AI use – Future of Work

Applications of AI

The union representing Hollywood's film and television crews said Tuesday it had reached a tentative three-year agreement with the major studios that includes wage increases and guardrails on the use of artificial intelligence.

Members of the International Alliance of Theatre Employees (IATSE), which includes lighting technicians and costume designers, are set to ratify the agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which represents companies like Disney and Netflix.

According to the union, the terms of the agreement include incremental wage increases of 7 percent, 4 percent and 3.5 percent over a three-year period.

With regard to AI, the contract includes “language ensuring that employees are not required to provide AI prompts in a manner that could result in the termination of a covered employee.”

In late 2023, the SAG-AFTRA actors union and studios reached a labor agreement, ending a roughly six-month dispute that had halted film and TV production.

The deal also included wage increases and streaming bonuses that union leaders said would amount to more than $1 billion over three years, and included protections for the use of AI in film production.
