Postdoc Researcher “VideoQA at Sitcoms: Extending NMN Multihop Processing to Handle Common Sense Reasoning Using Common Sense Knowledge Bases” It will be directed by Dr. Ehsan Abbasnejad and will include researchers from Monash University. This role will contribute to the Center’s aim to build a world-class research capacity in Machine Learning (ML) while demonstrating the potential and impact of this knowledge on Australian industry.
Video Question Answering (VideoQA) is a fundamentally difficult problem involving a leap forward in the application of machine learning and AI. Situational comedies are usually set within a confined space, but when smart agents are given an episode, they wrestle with rich socio-cultural phenomena rooted in both language and visuals, such as sarcasm and body language.
This postdoc role explores how common sense and neurosymbolic approaches inspired by advances in natural language processing and computer vision can improve VideoQA. Specifically, the project team will build a video inference system based on Neural Module Networks (NMN) that provides explainable multi-hop inference capabilities. The project also designs “social robots” that can act intelligently in socially and culturally complex environments.
This work on sitcoms aims to enhance VideoQA by (i) handling complex questions that require multi-hop reasoning and (ii) handling the complexity of social and cultural contexts. increase. This will contribute to next-generation visual and verbal task algorithms by improving the inference process.

To be successful, you need:
- PhD in computer science or related field or equivalent industry experience
- Programming experience and expertise in Python and related deep learning libraries
- Experience and demonstrable expertise in one or more of the following areas: Natural Language Processing, Visual Language Processing, Visual Language Models, Deep Learning, Applied Robotic Vision
- Proven track record of publication in leading machine learning, computer vision, artificial intelligence and/or robotics conferences and/or journals commensurate with experience and opportunity
- written and oral fluency in English and the ability to communicate scientific ideas to a professional audience
- Strong work ethic and ability to work well both independently and as part of a wide range of teams, including industrial partners
- Commitment to the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion.
- Possess experience and/or abilities that contribute to advancing research capabilities to industry and the wider community.
