Reuters – Artificial intelligence startup Anthropic, which competes with OpenAI to build AI-infrastructure models, said Tuesday it has raised $450 million from investors including Alphabet Inc.’s Google and Spark Capital.

The latest round brings Anthropic’s total funding to nearly $1 billion, making it one of the most well-funded AI startups. The company didn’t disclose the valuation, but people familiar with the matter said it was valued at nearly $5 billion.

Fundamental models are the next wave of AI, trained on vast amounts of data that are not task-specific and can be used for a variety of tasks with minimal fine-tuning.

Funding for AI remains a bright spot for startups whose investment has slowed. In the first quarter, generative AI companies raised more than $1.7 billion in 46 deals, according to PitchBook data.

“We believe there are two big winners, but Anthropic has the best research team,” said Matt Murphy, partner at Menlo Ventures, another investor. “We validated interest from major strategic companies with big plans to integrate Anthropic into their applications.”

Other investors in this round include Salesforce and Sound Ventures. His Google, which is developing its own underlying model, is back after participating in the final round of Anthropic.
