AI-generated art has become extremely controversial since its proliferation in 2023. Critics argue that AI-generated art is not “real” art because it is created by a computer based solely on written instructions.
Some point out that the creators of the original artworks on which the AI works are based have not received financial compensation for their contributions.
Associated Press Last August, it was reported that three artists were suing the makers of an AI tool that can “generate new images on command” for copyright protection.
AP “I have expressed doubts about whether an AI company infringes copyright by analyzing billions of images and spitting out something different,” a federal judge in San Francisco wrote.
“People were tagging me on Twitter, and I replied, 'Hey, this is offensive. I don't consent to my name or work being used in this way,'” said Kelly McKernan, a Nashville-based visual artist and one of the plaintiffs.
She continued, “I've reached out to some of these companies and said, 'Hey, this little artist, I know you don't think of me at all, but I'd really appreciate it if you wouldn't use my work like this,' and I've had no response.”
