One of the largest cities in Latin America is working with VSaaS.ai and Lenovo to transform its existing video camera systems into smart surveillance devices to make streets safer for residents.
Technology is not only changing how we live, but also where we live. It is making cities more connected, more efficient and more sustainable – in short, smarter cities.
One of the largest cities in Latin America is embracing this change, spearheading multiple smart city initiatives to improve the quality of life for its citizens. Public safety is a top priority, and the city of millions is working with VSaaS.ai and Lenovo to bring artificial intelligence (AI) and computer vision to its existing infrastructure to make its streets safer.
Deploying AI at the Edge
The city deployed hundreds of Lenovo ThinkEdge SE70 and Lenovo ThinkSystem SE350 edge servers, integrating with its existing network of video cameras on streets, at intersections and in subway stations. Running powerful VSaaS.ai software, these servers transform ordinary cameras into smart surveillance devices that can analyze video data in real time.
Francisco Soto, founder and CEO of VSaaS.ai, believes AI-powered video analytics can provide cities with better insights into how to keep residents safe and improve their quality of life.
Francisco explains: “Lenovo Edge Servers make it quick, easy and affordable to add advanced video analytics to cameras already installed, enabling faster, more accurate surveillance at lower cost and with less effort.”
Access to AI-enabled infrastructure and technical expertise through the Lenovo AI Innovators program enabled VSaaS.ai to rapidly achieve large-scale deployment across cities.
Protecting public safety
Previously, operators monitored the cameras manually – typically, one operator could monitor footage from 16 cameras in an average four- to six-hour shift – but AI can automatically monitor data from 250+ camera feeds simultaneously and detect dangerous or unusual behavior, such as a person climbing over a fence, lying on the ground, or raising their arms.
This means agencies can mobilize more quickly to prevent threatening situations from escalating and protect people who may be at risk. “By reducing response times, our solution is contributing to reducing crime rates in the city.”
Go further
The city is actively exploring other potential use cases for VSaaS.ai and the Lenovo solution, including traffic management, automatic license plate detection, identifying fare defaulters on public transportation, and even helping reunite lost pets with their owners.
“AI-powered traffic monitoring allows cities to respond to incidents in real time and regulate traffic, reducing congestion and improving road safety,” Francisco says. “Similarly, computer vision in metro stations can help public transport agencies make trips safer and more efficient and crack down on fare evasion. VSaaS.ai is becoming a 'comprehensive platform' that connects all kinds of cameras available in the city and offers a video surveillance app.”
These efforts have put the city at the forefront of smart city innovation – it's regularly ranked as the smartest city in Latin America, and it has big plans for the future to make it an even safer and better place to live.
About VSaaS.ai
VSaaS.ai specializes in cloud video analytics and AI-powered video surveillance as a service (VSaaS). The Chile-based startup was founded by experts with over 10 years of experience in analytics and IoT technologies.
VSaaS.ai has three smart city initiatives: municipal (public safety), metro (fare evasion, security, traffic flow), and traffic light systems (traffic violations, vehicle and license plate recognition). Their smart city surveillance platform serves as a comprehensive solution to address these diverse needs and serves as the foundation for a range of specialized surveillance applications.
The VSaaS.ai solution is hardware agnostic and can connect to any camera, allowing users to access device data and control the camera remotely through a cloud-based app, while also providing powerful object detection and pattern recognition capabilities, turning ordinary cameras into intelligent devices.
