So what can you do?
The well-meaning concept of a “digital detox” exists for a reason, but it often fails because the harder you work, the less likely you are to turn off or mute your notifications.
For this reason, remote work practices due to the pandemic have left millions of employees working unpaid and late hours as people find themselves confusing family time with work time. A self-imposed digital detox is as effective as one’s willpower or as one’s ambition.
However, there is also a way to take advantage of the digital clutter itself. Setting email and messaging filters, carefully managing notification settings across all platforms, he can block part of the day just to pay off some of his digital debt.
