new delhi: A video of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman promoting an investment scheme promising Rs 5,000 per hour and claiming it can generate Rs 1,000 crore in six months is going viral on social media. However, the Press Information Bureau (PIB)'s fact-checking department called the video fake and said it was generated by AI.
PIB also confirmed that neither the Finance Minister nor the Government of India has announced or approved any such plan.
PIB's post on X reads, “A doctored video of Union Finance Minister @nsitharaman is circulating online that falsely suggests she is promoting an investment plan promising Rs 5,000 per hour and claiming that she can generate Rs 1,000 crore in six months. This video is fake and AI-generated.”
“Neither the Finance Minister nor the Government of India has announced or approved any such plan,” PIB said.
The PIB also urged the public to “not be fooled by false investment claims. For accurate information, rely only on official government sources.”
Earlier on Monday, an old video of Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu was leaked online with false claims as IndiGo flight cancellations continued. While over 4,500 IndiGo flights have been canceled in the past seven days, several social media posts showed the minister dancing at an event.
However, PIB's fact-checking department dismissed these claims as “misleading”. PIB Fact Check said Naidu's video went viral four months ago and is not related to the current Indigo crisis.
