After a month-long trial, Kerala will opt for an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered camera surveillance system from Monday. AI-powered cameras monitor all traffic violations on urban and rural roads in the state 24 hours a day and issue challans to traffic violators. An all-weather automated traffic violation detection system captures images of lawbreakers and alerts control rooms in 14 districts. The control room then processes the images and issues a legal notice to the driver based on the nature of the traffic violation.
Transport Minister Anthony Raju told media sources that the control room set up as part of the project can issue up to 25,000 notifications per day. In the first phase, notifications will be sent for traffic violations such as driving without a helmet, driving without a seatbelt, using a mobile phone while driving, jumping over a red light, riding a motorcycle with three people, speeding, and illegal/dangerous parking. is issued. A child up to the age of 12 is allowed as her second passenger on the motorcycle.
The state has asked the center to submit an amendment to the Central Motor Vehicle Law to facilitate children’s motorcycle trips. The exemption for children will continue until the center accepts the proposal, the minister said. Complaints about penalties for violations may be appealed before the RTO comes into force. The minister said an online facility for this will be introduced within two months.
34 cameras malfunction
He said 240,000 traffic violations were caught on June 2 alone during the trial period, compared with about 450,000 a month ago. The company has installed about 726 cameras as part of the Safe Kerala project, but currently has 692 in operation and 34 cameras that have malfunctioned due to road construction, accidents and other reasons will soon be operational.
