Samsung unveils the fastest LPDDR5X DRAM for AI applications

Applications of AI

Samsung has developed the industry's fastest LPDDR5X DRAM, reaching data transfer speeds of up to 10.7Gbps. Optimized for AI applications, this chip offers improved performance, power efficiency, and high capacity. Mass production is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2024.

Samsung produces the industry's fastest LPDDR5X DRAM

Samsung is the world's largest memory chip manufacturer. The South Korean tech giant has been leading the industry for many years. In October 2022, his latest LPDDR5X DRAM (dynamic random access memory) chip allowed him to achieve data transfer speeds of 8.5Gbps (gigabits per second). The company increased his speed by 25% and set a new record.

According to Samsung, this new solution is manufactured on a 12nm process node. This ensures a compact size (his fastest LPDDR5X DRAM is also the smallest of his existing LPDDRs) and improved power efficiency. This chip is ideal for on-device AI applications that require low-power, high-performance LPDDR memory. Samsung used special power-saving technology to achieve his 25% higher efficiency than the previous generation.

The new chips incorporate technologies such as power fluctuation optimization. Adjust power according to workload. Additionally, Samsung has expanded the low power mode interval and extended the energy saving period. These improvements reduce energy usage when processing data and help extend battery life on mobile devices. For server applications, higher power efficiency helps reduce total cost of ownership by consuming less energy.

On-device AI applications also require large memory solutions. To that end, Samsung's new LPDDR5X DRAM chips offer 30% increased capacity, including up to 32GB of single package capacity for mobile DRAM. The Korean company has customized the new chip for modern use cases. The company plans to expand LPDDR DRAM into various device categories beyond mobile phones and continue optimizing the chip for a new era of generative AI.

“As the demand for low-power, high-performance memory increases, LPDDR DRAM is increasingly being used in applications ranging from primarily mobile applications to other areas that traditionally require higher performance and reliability, such as PCs, accelerators, servers, and automobiles. is expected to expand,” YongCheol Bae said. , Executive Vice President of Samsung. “Samsung will continue to work closely with our customers to innovate and deliver products optimized for the upcoming on-device AI era.”

Mass production will begin in the second half of this year

Samsung appears to have started sampling 10.7Gbps LPDDR5X DRAM with industry partners. The chip is expected to enter mass production later this year after this validation with mobile AP (application processor) and mobile device providers. It could be commercially available by the end of 2024 or early 2025, in time for the Galaxy S25 series.
